Slatestep Creek

A quarter-mile of stepped slate above the Pisgah Ridge road, falling in short plates the width of a kitchen table. The water is cold in August and loud enough that you stop talking. We do not know who cut the trail. We are grateful to them.

Flow & depth

Steady, 12–20 cfs in August. Thigh-deep at the third plate.

Wildlife

Brook trout, two-lined salamanders, a heron that leaves when you do.

Access & parking

Gravel pull-off at mile 4.2. Room for three cars, no more.

Late May, and again the first cold week of October.
